2015 Master Artist Doris Stengel

2015 MASTER ARTIST DORIS STENGEL

An avid poet, Master Artist award winner Doris Stengel is one of the greats in the world of writing. Her poetry often depicts what small town living in the Midwest encompasses while showcasing her talent for writing. Her published books, Horizons Measured, Small Town Lines and Arrival & Departure are just a few places her work can be found.

Her endearing collection of poetry takes the reader off to distant times and places and returns us back again-with a renewed heart. Inspiring, haunting, joyful and whimsical, these poems continue to delight the reader through the entire books. Just a poem or two will let the reader know why Doris has become one of Minnesota's more important poets. Her work stays with you long after you've read it. So many of her poems beg to be re-read-just because of the feel-good joy of feeling her creative spirit that weaves these small masterpieces together.

"Doris Stengel's poems are filled with the "Now & Then" as she slips in and out of various histories, including her own. Stengel's poems are always well-crafted and interesting; she can work in form or form a shape to fit a subject. This is a collection that holds nothing back." Joyce Sutphen, Minnesota Poet Laureate

Richard Kendall, Concert Pianist/Teacher/Author from Hollywood, CA provides praise for Doris's work. "Doris Stengel has written a loving compilation of remembrances from her youth. Many are from our mutual hometown of Hurdsfield, ND. I loved the wide variety of subject material which ranged from "Grocer's Daughter" to "Upstairs Dentist" to "Morning In A Small Town Cafe." Her recollections of WW II are particularly memorable and nostalgic "Learning War," "For The Cause," and "How The War Burst My Bubble." I was touched by the memories of the several people in her penned lines that I also knew personally. This "woven tapestry of words," delightfully down-to-earth, makes for a superb read!"

AT THE END OF THE DOCK: A POEM BY DORIS LUETH STENGEL

A dock is a summertime thing in
Minnesota.
Certainty of ice that comes with
crushing power
demands removal from autumn cold
water.
Ritualistic replacement by men in
rubber waders
ignites celebration of summer's
arrival
in explosions of cannonballing
children.

Tan legs launch sealslick bodies
from corduroy runway into liquid
rebirth.
Ecstasy-flung towels decorate its
length.
Boats rub its comforting side,
nodding approval.

Old feet stand next to bare wiggly
ones
cast lines rigged with Rapalas or
bobbers.
Fathead minnows naively seek
shelter
in pseudo-safety of plank shadows;
while nearby schools of perch and
sunfish
circle, learning survival tactics.

Dreamer toes dangle, tempt nibblers,
test temperature for total immersion.
Deck chairs anchored above gentle
lappings
hold readers of Michener and Frost,
seat viewers for redripe sunsets
played on panoramic skyscreen.

Olympic platform awards gold
medals
fashioned of flickering fireflies.
